When you try to 'infiltrate' despite making it widely known that you're potentially a witch OOCly, by having big, open scenes undisguised around every demon, forum posts that give it away, etc, it immediately takes away from the surprise factor. You'll either have people who are giving you a pass because they don't want to 'oppress the antagonist', or those who take a detail and stretch it a mile. Then there's the confusion where players don't know what's good and what's bad roleplay or what to act out, because they're not sure what amount of evidence is enough, etc etc. It quickly becomes a headache factor when there's a large group of people involved.
And it isn't being sneaky so much as expecting everyone to blind themselves and act dumb, or... never find out that a person is a witch, because the only way someone can stumble on it is in an anti-climatic fashion. So I think hex is better like this. A good witch should be able to manipulate people without a mind control button, anyway.
