Drakelings are typically found in the colder climates generally favored by dragons and the Drakanites. Drakelings have the appearance of tiny dragons, about as big as a hawk would be in the more southern climates, although they are more thin and delicate compared to a full born dragon. Drakelings come in a variety of color of scales, some in bright and vibrant hues while others are more dull and drab.

Drakelings fill part of the ecological niche that most birds normally fill in the dragon dominated regions, hunting smaller game and scavenging meat from larger predators. Although some birds still remain in this niche as well. Some Drakelings are captured as pets, although they tend to not do well being locked in homes all the time, needing wide open spaces and ability to wander. Some Drakanites train them as birds of prey in order to help them hunt smaller game.

Separating Drakelings from dragonkind is lack of the ability to use magic or flames, delicate bones, and limited intelligence. In common with snakes, the drakelings typically shed their scales often, they scales prized for decoration in traditional drakanite crafts, from necklaces, embroidered into shirts and clothes, replacements for beads on clothes, and other uses. Some in the southern lands use the scales to sell off as fake dragon youngling scales, or grind them up into a powder in ointments to give the vigor of dragon kind.

Wanted to come up with a more fantastical creature to fit an ecological niche in the Dragonlands, one that can survive the volcanos and cold that typically dominate drakanite areas.
