  The Deimos

Quote:                                                          "Harnessing the Mind, body, and spirit are imperative to both wellness and survival."

From Witches, to rogues and thieves, the impure and unjust were just as apparent in the previous hundreds of years. And as the very assaults from these enemies would ensue, the Astyan ancestors of the Deimos suffer immeasurable losses. Unable to defend themselves due to lack of weapons and restricted knowledge. A man named Markus Deimos, decided to take up the mantle,  and would establish the Deimos fighting style. A style that would manipulate both basic magical arts, and physical combat, intertwining them completely to create a hardened style of fighting. Allowing many to be at their most effective during life threatening situations. At this time, many of the people that have resided within the outskirts were no longer targets for losses...

But a force to be reckoned with.

Afterwards, long battles between rogues and thieves became much more possible for the people, using both strength and endurance to physically suppress, and fend attackers off. Manipulating mana to strengthen, and heighten ones physical and mental capabilities became a much more apparent strategy when combined with unarmed tactics. Becoming strong enough that with enough numbers, that protection for the Deimos became solidified.  And the Deimos finally live with  the peace they desired.

Generations and years have passed, along with the style passed down with it, slowly evolving and progressing to adapt to the Deimos. However as the group progressed, they would understood that life requires balance. And understanding themselves and their spirituality would soon became just as important as maintaining the body. For it was both their spirit and resolute thought, that had allowed them to prosper to present day. Many believe that mana and magic are often tools to help fulfill ones desire. However the group believes that mana is a reflection of ones inner will and spirituality. Alongside the belief that the spirit mana provides resides within all living beings, making preservation of life equally important as well.

                                                                                                           Rankings and Hierarchy

Quote:Senior Elder: Senior Elders are those that have knowledge and commitment to maintain head, but can no longer fulfill the physical duties an Elder is tasked with. They are given the highest respect and diligence, however work alongside the Elder, as an adviser. They are also tasked with providing trials, and evaluating the lower ranks.

Elder: The Elder is the head of the group. Directly responsible for overseeing actions of the lower ranks, and dealing with any external issues that may ensue. They have the upmost understanding of the concept of mind, body and spirit. They have stuck with the clan through years of dedication, and often seek out those who want instruction.

Disciplined: After the trial has been underwent and the Devoted has proven themselves, the Devoted become Disciplined. Tasked with assisting and mentoring Students and Devoted throughout their journey. If a Disciple decides to take travel to help forge their own journey, they may do so.

Devoted: As one transitions towards the title devoted their training drastically increases.  In order to strengthen the body, the Deimos Often being pushed towards limits considered both dangerous and taxing. However, many who openly choose to go forward willingly choose this ordeal as well. Hoping to not only climb in greater strength, but in greater knowledge and understanding. After two more years of practice and dedication, A devoted can decide to undergo a trial, can move towards discipline status.

Student: When one initiates themselves into the Deimos, one can anticipate the title of student. Students are both trained the basic martial arts and spirituality, this process often continues into a two year span. Only then when a student shows a willingness to dedicate themselves into this new way of living, are they given the title of devoted.

                                                                                                            Life Of The Deimos Clan

Quote:Life of the Deimos Clan is most often perceived as a journey for ones self improvement. However, at the start of morning, the deimos will decide on a location within esshar to travel, and start the day with group prayer and meditation. by viewing mana from a spiritual standpoint, they believe that channeling and controlling this life force is just as imperative as training ones body. Due to this, it is not out of the ordinary to see one channeling their mana into their respective elemental aspects during medatative state. Afterwards, many of the Deimos Clan would undergo training based on rank. Students, would spend most of their lives learning the basics of combat, and experience, and learning basics of elemental literature, history, and Spirituality.

The Devoted would undergo advanced fighting techniques, muscle conditioning, breathing techniques, heavy spiritual focus and strict training regimens that put many to the test. One can leave the path of the devoted anytime, but cannot progress upward without the full experience of the ranking. During the two years the Devoted spirit and strength would become bolstered, and would undergo a Trial that will reveal both the knowledge and abilities they have learned so far, and how effective they are when in use. Under strict evaluation of both the Elder or senior Elder, they will decide if one requires more training, or qualify to become Disciplined.

As one progresses past the stage of Devoted, one now has both progressed into the Disciplined. Understanding the ways of old and exploring the new, the devoted have a range of opportunities at their disposal. They can begin to teach the Devoted, and Student respectively, enriching the lower ranks with knowledge and personal experience. Or, they can decide to Progress their own journey going to travel enriching themselves with experiences and tests of their own.

                                                                                                                    The Code Of The Oxen

Quote:Those who take this path alongside you are your brothers and sisters. And if not by blood, then by the spirit itself. Disputes between others should be settled with words, or with the consultation of the Elder rankings.

Overcome your emotions, so that it does not overcome you. Whilst conflict is a imperative to balance, both your mind and your decisions should become and act with justification and impartiality. Only resorting toward violence if the situation beckons for it. Remember, the strength of ones mind and resolve is greater than any weapon this world could offer.

Wealth is to be spread to those towards the less fortunate. Power serves to protect those that cannot. And Knowledge is an experience to be learnt, and taught towards others. The world does not just belong to those that lead it, but all of humanity alongside it. As nothing provides a better insight of society than how they treat their weakest link.

Whilst striving for greatness, always aim for humility first. Take victories in modesty, whilst Accepting losses and mistakes as an instruction to push forward.

The life of another is just as precious as your own. Destroying it should not come so swiftly, as taking life will sever its potential to grow and change. One must shoulder the burden of death, and be prepared for to accept responsibility for the consequences that may follow.

  On Felinae
Posted by: ferrousLeonine - 11-20-2019, 10:21 PM - Forum: Pre-Meranthe - Replies (1)

Perhaps predictably, the player with the most feline username is going to try to write lore for these guys. (I am not a furry.)

My intent is to give felinae a creation myth. Kitsune have their stuff with freeing Jiuweihu, and ookami have their summer and winter wolf thing. Felinae deserve something too and I want to answer the question 'why do these people have kawaii neko ears'. If you'd like to know the answer... read on.

Quote:In a time before records, magi wove miracles. The very universe was their canvas and what they chose to paint was limited only by their imaginations. A sect of these magi sought more power from the cosmos, and beseeched the star Leanoeaus for wisdom. It answered. They collected encoded answers from this star into a book with pages woven from starlight, and ink rendered from the very stuff of the night sky.

The completed volume was known as The Leanoeaus Grimoire. The wisdom it contained was encrypted, and had to be deciphered. The magi involved needed familiars to assist in the safeguard and study of it. Something clever, and something strong. Figuring the wisdom of a feline-aspected star would best be uncovered by other felines, the magi created a chimera of cat and man.

For years these familiars, now known as the felinae, worked along side the magi to decrypt the volume. But as the tome was deciphered, the answers proved to be too much for the magi. They began to go insane, obsessed with the tome and the knowledge it gave them. In a bid to defend the tome they were created to study, the felinae stole it. It was a betrayal against their masters, but not their duty to the tome. They fled with it to the mountains of Esshar, leaving the magi in this sect to wither and fade without the source of their power.

The last act with the tome was forming a covenant with Leanoeaus. He vowed to bless and protect the felinae, and they vowed to safeguard the grimoire. To ensure it could never be abused again it was split into twelve smaller volumes. The felinae divided into tribes to protect each part.

While the tome has long since faded from the memory of the world, the felinae are still raised as the clever protectors of Leanoeaus's knowledge. It's this skill they bring to the world, along with the vague notion you probably shouldn't trust a cat. After all- they've chosen the stars over men before.

Silverwall Mine
Building The Esshar of Tomorrow

The location of the founding of Osrona was not by chance. Though the useful waterways and verdant forests helped, the majority of Esshar's mineral wealth has come directly from Silverwall Mine. Not far from the city itself, Silverwall is nestled close by in the northwest mountains. Once it was accessible by simple rail, but they are long since in a state of disrepair and are now only used for short distance travel in the mine itself.

Silverwall is well known in the city as arguably the least dangerous area for Magi to gather smithing and alchemy resources; however, access to it throughout its long history it has been more or less strictly controlled by either various guilds, noble houses, or bandit colonies, and most mining foremen are quick to warn prospectors away from the flooded lower floors.

Today, Silverwall is long past its glory days as the source of a near-infinite river of mythril (the ubiquitous "silver wall" dried up centuries ago), and the only workers to traverse its depths are fairly strong Magi - groups of them, usually, for protection - rather than the endless tide of low-paid laborers or prisoners of days gone past.

“The world is what you make of it, friend. If it doesn't fit, you make alterations.”

Age: 18 || Gender: Male || Affiliation: City Watch || Race: Human || Height: 5 Foot 10 Inches

Chapter One

“Use your head for something more than to give your hat a ride, can't you?”

Flint's Father was a traveling peddler who sold simple iron tools and random items to poor villages to turn a easy profit. He arrived in a small nameless village one Summer and flirted his way into half the unmarried women's pants. He left a few weeks later to never return - Leaving flint and a couple of other bastards in the village. Flint's mother was heartbroken but did her best to raise poor Flint. She gave him his father's last name. Eventually, she passed away from illness when Flint was fourteen years old.

He was adopted by a former soldier turned hunter in his retirement. He was taught the skills of the trade and seeing that flint had a fair amount of talent in wind magic, he sent him with a letter of recommendation to the Osrona City Watch. IT wasn't the best job, but it gave him a opportunity to advance that he never would have had in a small nameless village.
And that is where Flint's story begins - Arriving to Osrona at the age of Eighteen and enlisting in the City watch.

Onwards!

  House Duran

A blood-soaked name.
Quote:"I fear greatly for our people, more than anything else. To think a neighbor, or even a friend, could possibly turn to such vile acts on the face of Esshar... while their reasons can be considered, they can never warrant their actions. These occult rituals... these... these... Black Arts... Witchcraft, Demonology... these acts, these heresies, will not guide us to a radiant future Esshar should be resolved to reach. They only prove to bring us closer to downfall I never hope to see."
-High Priest Solon Duran, before the Monarch, explaining the reason to his tenacity and the necessity of his actions in the trials. Apx. 816AC.

The founding and prominence of House Duran can be approximated in time somewhere between the years 808AC and 824AC, more commonly referred to as the earlier years of the Witch Trials where the fear of Witches was becoming apparent. The individual solely responsible for the reputation and ennoblement would be none other than Solon Duran, second son of the house and the Faith's High Priest of Phos. It was Solon, determined, who most vocally pushed for much of what would occur during the witch trials. It was Solon, tenacious, who helped discover a means to discover a witch through relentless research once truth potions began to falter. It was Solon, unwavering, who created the atmosphere of devotion to the True Faith and repression of the arts of witchcraft and demonology. Though opinions were mixed up him, among most, it was certain that he aimed to put an end to the surge of witchcraft.

By the end of the era of Witch Trials, House Duran was ennobled by the Monarch, recognized for its tenacity, and there were none that didn't know its name or the House's head. However, as the presence of witches declined and demons became less of an occurrence over the stretching years, the fame of House Duran fell idly. The sudden death of Solon as he neared his old age, yet not there just yet, was likely a nail into the coffin for the house. Though Solon had left all the next Heir would need, the house's main purpose fell into a slow irrelevance as time passed. Forcing the hand of the heir to find other means to build upon the legacy Solon left in the appropriate manner. It was found that aiding the church proved the most notable.

There have been none who had made a great name for Duran than Solon had, though there have been few who presented similar tenacious acts that can be remembered. Though, in the current day, with the witch trials long-since-ended, various perspectives float about in regards to the house Duran. Both small tales that speak good of its past deeds, and rumors and speak that tell ill of many of its accomplishments or even its lack of use besides dogs of the church. Yet it is undoubted among the perspectives people had that the Duran expertise and methods of combating the occult, in particular, was second to none in the times of their grand limelight and even to the current day, few could hope to rival it.

If the house was an evil among Esshar's lands, it was a necessary one. Yet, that opinion varied person to person.

Erymanthus, the Primordial Boar, & the Erymite Boar Cult
Posted by: Tee - 11-20-2019, 04:52 AM - Forum: Lore - Replies (1)

Erymanthus, The Primordial Boar

Before the coming of man, before Eternia, before the wars of Atmos, the First Beast was crafted. In a prelude to the wars of Creation, Kraus Eternia created the first living being - Erymanthus, the First Boar, and imbued it with the forces empowering the plane of Atmos itself.

Erymanthus was -- and is -- nature personified - destruction and chaos, life and rebirth. Its true age is impossible to determine, and its presence as equally random; much of the time the First Boar resides in the Spirit World, a natural part of the World itself, where it is entirely immortal. It is, however, known to be capable of traversing planes with ease, and often appears on Eternia itself.

Unlike most deities, Erymanthus has no particular goals in mind-- simply destruction for as long as possible, and then something else catches its interest. The last known sighting of Erymanthus was on the continent of Agartha in roughly 1500, where it was cornered and destroyed after rampaging for several years. In such a situation, the First Boar simply reappears in the Spirit World again to wander about before returning to another plane.

Over the millennia, mortals have usually simply gotten used to the occasional legendary rampage, then cleaned up the mess afterwards.

The Erymites

The Erymites have an old presence around and in the Imperial City of Osrona. These are effectively a secretive, tradition- and honor-bound cult of warriors dedicated to the Way of the Boar, rumored to be both a fighting style and a general guide to life. Erymites are typically highly aggressive, yet direct this aggression towards those that deserve it most.

The Boar Cult exists in small groups throughout the peninsula, often meeting in caves, deep forests, or dark basements; their meetings, festivals, and celebrations are said to typically involve copious amounts of both alcohol and fistfighting.

An Erymite can always be identified by the identified by the simple tattoo (ink or burn) that is applied during initiation somewhere on their person. Often they are secretive about it and their relation to the Cult, but once successfully identified, stop bothering with deception and simply acknowledge it.

  The Historical Record Project
Posted by: Theori - 11-20-2019, 01:11 AM - Forum: Suggestions - Replies (8)

Okay, so, this idea is pretty simple, and I feel it'll be both widely beneficial for newer players, and something that lets people feel like they've had a little bit more of an impact on game history. What I'm thinking about is what I'm calling the 'Historical Record Project', and its pretty simple. Essentially, we create a forum thread for each decade as it begins, and whilst the decade is ongoing, people can submit public  (if this happens, I'd imagine metagaming private stuff into it would be equivalent to ingame metagaming) events that occurred during that decade. Events in this context are things like festivals, tournaments, notable arrests, notable deaths, notable promotions (like someone becoming an Exarch or above-type rank), as well as any particularly interesting rumours and of course world events. At the end of the decade, the submitted events are reviewed, and the ones considered to match the criteria are put into a wiki page of the decade. Also, just to clarify, this would ideally be a project for the larger playerbase rather than an extra thing for admins to worry about

The benefits of doing this would be making the game a lot more approachable for new players (When I first started Eternia, the sheer scale of a player driven roleplay world that had existed for x amount of years led to me bouncing off it, and only returning half a year later, which was a shame considering how much I actually enjoyed Eternia once I started properly understanding what was going on), making it easy for people to get up to speed on recent events they might have missed due to breaks in playing, and just straight up making it possible to see tangible evidence of the history of the game, rather than just relying on stories from older players.

I've been considering this idea for a while (since as far back as Spires when I had returned and was struggling to figure out what I'd missed, just ask Lindah), and I figure that with the fresh start CoE provides, its the perfect time for it.

Anyways, I'm also looking for suggestions/feedback for the idea, so feel free to leave your thoughts!

  The Art of Revolution
Posted by: Elevans - 11-19-2019, 07:21 PM - Forum: Pre-Meranthe - Replies (1)

The Art of Revolution is a prohibited book published by someone with an alias of "Elevans". Most of the samples are continuously burned, and spreading this literature work is counted as an enormous offense against the crown.

Despite that, fate differs from person to person. Maybe a guard, while confiscating the book, decides to read it. Maybe a criminal distributes it from time to time. Nobody knows the origin, but some say they are very attached to a member of The Syndicate.

Maybe you will find one someday, maybe not. Who knows.

Chapter One
Lost Time

It is feared that politics will "completely disappear from the world" not only by the totalitarian abolition of plurality but also by its dissolution into the glacial waters of Esshar's modern selfish calculation. The tendency to depoliticize the present monarchy gaining strength after its success in war confirms this fear. Public space is laminated between the pressures of economic horror and the lamentations of abstract moralism. This depletion of politics and its attributes pervades the jargon of this putrid society. Beyond the effects of the conjuncture, once the military metamorphoses into the true oppressive force they are and the people's unrest show the ill-treatment of the plebs, it is exactly a malaise and a crisis in the current system.

The modern cult of progress is based more on a culture of time and future than of space. Reduced to a secondary role, space is synonymous to death and immobility. It is no longer known about the poor man's treatment, where he lives, what he does. The bourgeoisie isolates itself in a den of greed and spending, as rotten as they can be. This cult opposed the creative capacity of living time. The stimulating feeling of speed that goes beyond the performance of techniques has its secret: the demonic rotations of capital continually revolutionizes the conditions of its valorization. This vertigo of acceleration compresses time in the moment and erases the locality in the expansion of spaces, highlighting the lack of importance of the true citizen who carries the city on his back. Culture, diversity, morality? No time for that.

If speed makes wealth, the man who spins faster than his own shadow is destined for a beautiful fortune. But this never explains what a miracle leads the mercantile circulation to turn nothing into gold and to turn names into productive activity. The fastest bourgeois of the kingdom surpassed the sound barrier. It will not take long for him to reach its maximum speed before hitting a wall with all the momentum created, if the people scream their wishes.

If speed makes wealth, why? Why can they hoard incommensurable amounts of gold simply by being born inside a family of aristocrats while the working class starves while society creates criminals simply because they can't properly distribute the capital? The fallacy that a citizen can ascend births a false sense of meritocracy in cases exalted by the media representations of journals that support this rotten queen.

A true contradiction between the geographical mobility of capital (such as money and merchandise) and the relative immobility of labor appears, in this age of absolute monarchy, as the uneven and combined development of spaces and social times. This hierarchical organization of territories and the increasing importance of flow control (trade, money, information or raw materials) outline a strong order that reigns over a patchwork of the weakest. Now political action has its own places and rhythms, capable of alienating a portion of population that feels represented by receiving mere crumbs while making whole bread.

But this act of removing the politics from the people is what reduces us to mere unthinking heads. Every act is political - from buying food to respecting your father. From dancing to having sexual relations. They are removing our voices, and Ostara is currently in shambles. Social shambles. This city can be emancipated, but it will take time. I urge you to spread the knowledge inside this book - this way, we, the people, will grow as a singular force capable of eliminating they from above who neglect our cause.

  The Game of Blades
Posted by: CrystikRage - 11-19-2019, 09:19 AM - Forum: Pre-Meranthe - No Replies

[Image: chase-stone-assassins-strike-fantasy-art.jpg]

The Game of Blades
Quote:"What made them think to check the drainage grates on that street...?" - A bewildered would-be assassins last thoughts before being slain in his attempt on an Astor noble.
Every so often, a game of sorts takes place between the Knight squads of the First Light. And with the growing threat of the Syndicate and their assassination attempts, these games have all the more relevance. A game almost as old as the country itself, it pits two squads against each other with the life of a VIP charge as the prize. Typically a Noble volunteers to take the role and does nothing more than go about their daily business, while a squad of Knights work to defend them from any would-be threat.

While the other plots to circumvent their comrades efforts and assassinate them. The rules of the game are fairly straightforward. If the entirety of the defending 'team' is incapacitated, the principal is considered deceased. If an assassin reaches the principal and no guard is within ten feet or so, the principal is considered deceased. If the principal is separated from their guards by any means, they are considered deceased.

There are other rules and qualifications for success and failure. The assassins have a certain time-frame to act within, not being allowed to seek outside help, and other such rules. Naturally, while the game mimics an assassins plot, lethal force is strictly prohibited, as well as attempts that would be harmful to the city or civilians. While this doesn't quite match what a true assassin would be attempting, the training and insight it provides is still invaluable. This tradition has allowed many seemingly invisible holes in the security of a high value person be found, and gives the Knights invaluable experience in dealing with the situations if they dreadfully arise.
