Let it never be said that I have conducted my research without proper course or detailed structure to it's tests and findings. Amidst this old journal, I hope to detail my Progress in academic pursuits and provide a gateway into the method behind my thinking and reasoning for said experiments and the results therein of the studies conducted. That being said I believe the best way to begin, at least when it's not personal My more personal life and effects is to title the research papers, and thus I shall begin with my findings on the first experiment conducted, the papers themselves being transcribed from my personal notes both for proofreading and for ensuring the information is brought to full memorization.
The Efficacy and practicality of applied medicines and magic upon the Anatomy. Pt1
-The page itself is covered in what looks like small droplets of blood, some smeared, some dripped upon the page in different manners. Along the sides of the pages are notes detailing the anatomical designs of rats and the composition of different parts of their bodies compared to others, in terms of fat composition, muscle build, and major arteries along the cardiovascular system-
Preliminary studies have been successful thus far, the anatomical structure of rats makes them suitable candidates for early studies into vertebrates. Warm-blooded, with complex enough lymphatic system to simulate rejection and shock it's also noted that their resistance to disease might make the validity and overall efficacy of the study come into question, but after I am done with my work with them I hope to move onto larger animals, primarily simeans and then when my work has become refined enough, humans and other sentients.
Thus far the beginnings of my work start towards one end, Detatching and reattatching the tail of the average rodent. While this endeavor seems simple in the beginning, it has become more and more apparent I need to do more than just weave magic into this. The proper alignment of nerves and bones, not to mention the treatment of the wound itself lends credance to the idea that even larger and more complex organs, appendages and extremedies are going to be a challenge. To that end I have started analyzing the anatomical make up of the tail of rodents, hoping to come into propper understanding of the physiological and magical make up of the animal in more detail. See the Margins for more detailed analysis.
From my work so far I have deduced that the tail itself is composed mainly of fatty tissue and simple musculature, a non vital organ that while inhibits the rat's ability to balance, will not leave me with a dead subject should I slip up. I have been delving into the work thus far with enthusiasm, the lich told me that I shoudl start with fingers, but.. this will do for now, until im certain.
The first three subjects have been isolated, and fed similar diets, that being a mix of grains and water, all kept at a relatively sterile enviorment. From here I have begun work on the first rodent. Restraining it, and carefully, removing the appendage.Notable blood loss was seen in the subject. I then proceeded to clean and tend to the wound in similar fashion to if I was planning to staunch the bloodflow. From there I waited five minutes to allow coagulation of the major veins to take effect before I began the process.
I started with crude implements firstly, switching the tail back in as close aproximation to the original anatomical positioning as I could, from there I delved into blood magic, feeling the blockages in it's veins and arteries, slowing it's heart slightly to help keep the creature still as I began to draw small amounts of my own vitae to help the now blocked passages for blood reconnect. To my dismay though this yielded little results, Such a fine percision was needed, it wasn't a matter of making new veins, but fixing old ones. It took me a few tries to focus in on the injuries themselves, but by then the subject was beyond my means.Current status is in captivity awaiting disection for further study.
The second subject went much the same way as the first, the only difference being the timing, I kept it on a shorter schedule and began to apply the treatment within three minutes, this helped the arteries reconnect faster, but not in the same ways they had been before the injury was sustained, I applied small amounts of antibiotics to the subject, but later the tail went gangreen. Status is dead, waiting disection for further study.
The last subject from the first batch yieled the most results. I Payed more attention this time to not just the blood, but the nerves along the tail, I can't believe I hadn't thought of it before but I had been misaligning them by larger incriments than I thought. This time, I shortened the time from three minutes to two and began the procedure with the intent of fixing the injury from the inside out, working my way through the severed connection with more caution this time, I even managed to get most of the arteries and veins correct. Though the musculature became different in striation leading to a permanent bend to the tail, but otherwise a sucessful reattatchment. Status, alive being studied for further testing; Designation, Cheddar.
End of Pt.1
I find that perhaps the Old Litch was right in challenging me to be creative, His general aloofness is somewhat curious, but his Pedagogical imperative to push me is without a doubt intresting for a teaching method.
