Memories of Myllenoris
#1
"Hidden in leaves through mists white and pale
Lie the murmuring stones with a silent tale
Set quiet by cataclysm of an unknown scale
The muted earth beckons to the fabled Vale."

"We have been here for precisely four months now. Last week Ema and I stumbled upon yet another strange sight.. Common fare for these lands. At the precipice of where the river turns to a fall the waters beckon to those that draw near and once gazed upon the viewer is forced to recall some amalgamation of their most painful memories. Ema seemed to be more affected than I would have thought of someone so cheerful and upbeat. Beneath those falls a song floated across the way drawing us out of our melancholy to behold a group of spirits dancing and awaiting our reaction. Ema chose to dance with them, but as I was cursed with scarce grace for such motions I chose instead to sing and offer verse to their song.. The spirits were pleased by our offering."

A pittance for the ferry, a pittance for the ferry.

Through brush over vine, into what lies beyond
A river of memories glitters on the face of a pond
A lone bottle drifts with the hopes of our past
Ne'er shall we chase it for ne'er shall it last

Dance and make merry, dance and make merry.

I've tasted life's fruits both bitter and sweet
And I've laughed until mirth did bring me to weep
Yet ne'er shall I pay the cost to make it return
Allow it to be lost in the river's turbulent churn

A pittance for the ferry, a pittance for the ferry.

Over a year has transpired since we departed for Myllenoris. I pray that Asphodel fares well without me, but for the time being the work here is important than anything else I could contribute. I am sure they scarcely miss a cripple like me.

Even wounded as I am I can hold myself well against the beasts of the Vale as we work to break the seal that binds us here. While investigating some abandoned ruins I caught the scent of fresh blood and knew I was in another predator's hunting grounds. As we tracked it back to the source we caught the thing, half-man and half-wolf. Hungry and hating. Golden eyes alight with malice.

Through great effort the three of us managed to finish the monstrosity's rampage. Its blood was some of the best I have been graced to consume to date. The thrill of besting a fellow hunter while keeping with my morals. Perhaps that is what gave me the clarity of mind to make the choice that many will likely condemn as foolish.

A Teraphim woman had fallen prey to the attack and was left with her innards exposed to the elements. "The phial." she crooned in a flagging voice. I opened the satchel that had been strewn across the parched dirt and found within it fabled White Oil. Enough to heal her wounds.. Or my own. I could have used it, mended myself, and stolen her heart.. Repaired it all in a single fateful stroke.

Yet I poured it on her wounds. Told her who I am, what I am, and not to look down upon my kind. We must be more than our base desires lest we become that rabid monster lost in the throes of hunger.

I rejected completion to retain humanity.

That is what I tell myself.
