Iron Grip - Let's talk about it.
#1
Iron Grip. Let's talk about it.

The requirement to purchase ability costs an earth attunement, then fifty RPP spent in the metal tree. The spell costs fifteen to purchase. Total cost in order to get this ability runs anyone around seventy-five total investment in order to obtain it. Now the ability does alright damage for a ranged homing, the bread and butter is the fact it locks your enemy in place. Now I am not saying this tree isn't capable of some awesome damage and high-class combinations because it absolutely is. Without a single doubt, this tree has some nasty things which allow for awesome stuff when fighting, but I wish to talk about what isn't so awesome.

This is quite possibly the first suggestion I've made in a long while, but I feel it is warranted by my experiences throughout the game trying to accomplish some cool stuff while using these trees I have never really touched before. This ability does exactly what it says, roots your opponent. Now, what counters a root? Cleanse, immunities, basically just that really. How much would a counter to a metal build really run anyone? If they are lucky, you can get a warcry spell stone from the misery box which I believe still allows folks to cleanse out this ability. The medium option is to run a melee build and spent those precious twenty-five points into getting Garuda or Unnarmed's version(hidden abilities with Q cleanses apply for a thirty total) Otherwise, you're stuck with the extremely expensive cleanse abilities from either wind tree or water that run the player about a total of forty points either way.

Now. A ZERO up to forty-point investment to counter a seventy-five RPP at the minimum ability... would you say that is "fair" quite possibly! Though I can understand where people will say my idea for this will not be fair as well, but I also have a counter to that later on. The thing which I am proposing is that Iron Grip is made into a special class of non-cleansable spells much like how Curse is or was. Now before you freak out! I know, absolutely bonkers to think that you would allow somebody to stop your movements for a long period of time! But here is the thing! Make it- DUN DUN! A master hidden that you have to apply for! Or even a public master! This way the ability has a bit more to offer than a bit of damage against the current builds I've been seeing ran in the current state.

There is another counter to this ability alongside the things previously mentioned which is the big old immunities. Now currently there are a handful of those laying around combined into a few different trees, some are really good while others can be meh. But there are still these facts to consider when coming down to what counters this, immunities are on the less side of this argument as I believe they provide a pinch more fairness since you're locked from smashing me with spells throughout the time you're immune to damage(besides poison pls nerf). Anyway, let's break it down just the same as the previous. Mist form- forty investment counter. Smog? Big forty-five, but the spell is spicy and deals damage so it's fair. Then you got the most blegh of the immunities in the counter game to Iron Grip. Shadow Walk, forty invest but this spell doesn't stop the music. And there is the power of spearmint itself from the Time tree coming in at the end, a big old master hidden! Chronos. It's like forty-five points, not a huge thing in this but still way cheaper than the root ability.

Final notes. Iron grip mad expensive compared to the things that make it useless, would like to see it buffed into a non-cleansable. Make it hidden to compensate? This is a genuine suggestion, the rest of the tree is not what I'm talking about. Give me your genuine input on my idea, I'm open to conversation and understanding.

No.

Iron Grip is a root that you can only miss if you're a true monkey, in a tree that literally every spell applies serious CC. Titans Lance is one of the best spells in the game, Crushing Iron pogs your opponent, and metal whip is, well, a good whip. Every spell has its counters, and saying something needs to be better because of that is one of the dumbest takes I've ever seen.

ok but can we talk about the fact it has a range of 12 and lasts forever and a day?

You can lower the duration if I don't have to spend my whole RPP allowance to get it.

As someone who had an ally who used metal and sparred with him often?
As someone who used metal with the intention of abusing iron grip?

No.
If someone invests into a move to counter root-focused builds, they should be allowed to take advantage of it. At worst, you at least trade one move to make them force an invul (and from what I can see, there aren't any invul abilities that have a lower CD than iron grip), or use a cleansing abilities.

P.S: I do not think war cry cleanses one out of root, though I could be wrong.

Metal users when I pop reform, Garuda's Q or War Cry:

On a more serious note, the range on it is too long, same with metal sear thing people talk about. That can hit you if you're at the other side of the RPB box and still deal 3-4k damage and can outlast mistform from what I've seen.

Look at the entire tree as a whole. Metal is one of the strongest at the moment. It's a root in a tree with essentially two stuns on it. If the tree only had one cc (like sand does), it wouldn't nearly be as strong as it is now.

Yes, it is a root. Yes, roots are shit, but when you have another stun combo to fall back on after your opponent cleanses or invuls, you're fine.
