During Atrellya's invasion of Meranthe, there were many individuals who rose up to fight against the coming darkness. Those that fought with blade and spell, and those that enacted grand rituals to slow the tide. It is the result of one of those rituals that resulted in a curious phenomena to all would-be witches from then on.
Those that are contemplating signing a book of shadows, willingly or otherwise, often receive a vision of warning. This vision can take many forms. Some report seeing a woman with green hair showing them distant 'what ifs' of what they may be asked to do in this life. Some report seeing visions of lives not their own... The lives their soul may yet have, if it remains free. Rarely are these visions enough to truly sway those that are committed, but for those with doubt in their heart, or those that do not fully understand what it is that they are giving up, this can provide a final warning. A reality check in which to change course, before they cross that terrible point of no return.
Fate is a fickle thing, and many view these visions as little more than illusions. Some lingering curse placed upon witches by a dying chronomancer. And yet, the signing away of one's soul is such a massive alteration of one's fate across lifetimes that some worry if the unknown guardian of time has something to do with this...
