Storm Dragons

Harbingers of blustering winds, heavy rains, and crashing lightning. Legend has it that they are responsible for the great storms of history. It is fabled that a single roar of these mighty beasts can conjure a storm that would last for weeks.

Originally Gehennan, many Storm Dragons have mated with many different cultures, as their home was once a huge port wherein sailors, pirates, and the like would visit.

The Storm Dragons are devout worshippers of Quetzalcoatl, and hold three attributes close to their heart:

Glory
The Storm Dragons hold power and glory in high regard. It is natural to seek might, and to thrust one’s self into danger in the name of glory. Success as a Storm Dragon can be measured by scars and wounds, evidence of surviving danger.

In the early days of the Storm Dragons, the determination demonstrated by this branch of drakanites stopped their extinction at the hands of primordials. Tales of this are embellished, and used as bedtime stories for little dragons, though there is some truth in these tales.

Challenge
With the power of the sky’s fury tightly woven into their being, Storm Dragons often seek challenge, battling those clearly stronger than themselves in order to force growth within. There is no glory in challenging someone clearly weaker than yourself. There is no challenge in targeting a wounded foe.

It was this attribute that won the favor of Quetzalcoatl, as the tenacious spirit of the Storm Dragons proved to be as unstoppable as hurricane winds.

Conquest
Deeply rooted in Storm Dragon culture is the desire to cultivate. It may be the influence of pirates visiting Stormheart Crescent that resulted in this desire. Storm Dragons naturally lean towards claiming treasures of all sorts, be it land, gold, or even people. Conquest is an attribute that is often left open-ended. This attribute was what lead the Storm Dragons to steal lightning from Shenlong.

Traditions
[Image: festival.jpg]
Storm Dragon are highly ritualistic. Upon reaching adolescence, marked by the sprouting of their wings, Storm Dragons engage in mortal combat with their peers, battling for the right to grow. This barbaric culling of the weak was started thousands of years ago, and maintained by the grant matriarchs and patriarchs.

This extreme measure goads the greater halfshift out of drakanites, forcing the young into true life-or-death situations. It is this survival instinct that is said to call forth the greater halfshift from within.

Storm Dragons may travel by themselves in search of villages to terrorize, in line with the conquest attribute.

Storm Dragon tradition indicates that a Storm Dragon may seize leadership from the current master through an honor duel, where both combatants are at their full power. Only the mightiest of the Storm Dragons is fit to lead.

Ascension
The grand patriarch or matriarch of the Storm Dragons must grace a drakanite hoping to ascend to dragonhood. It is by their will that new dragons are formed. The grand patriarch or matriarch that decides who is worthy of the power that lies in wait.
Birth of Storm Dragons
When Storm Dragons are born, hurricanes and floodlike rains fill the air for the duration of the labor. It is difficult to conceal the birth of a Storm Dragon as a result. Storm Dragon blood is highly dominant, with draconic features highly common in mixed children, for better or worse.

Magic
Storm Dragons are often attuned to wind, water, or both, though mixed children may find themselves straying from the norm. There have been Firestorm Dragons, and Starstorm Dragons, and other amalgamations of elements. It is rare that a Storm Dragon is attuned to earth, and those that are tend to struggle in life.
Presence in Meranthe
Rosemary Stormheart came to Meranthe with her husband to raise their child away from these aggressive traditions, yet found her end while enriching her daughter's draconic education. The Stormheart that remained eventually ascended to become the grand matriarch herself, achieving her draconic form, ultimately surpassing her mother. The elder Stormheart is currently the genus for all Stormheart children in Meranthe.
Recent History
Stormheart Cresent was once the home of the Storm Dragons, though it was recently destroyed by the current grand matriarch. The island was conquered by one that sought to obtain the aspect of the dragon, utilizing dark, forbidden magics that enslaved and killed much of the population.
Following this tragic event, Storm Dragons have become scarce…
But not for long.
There are those that have scattered about the world, away from the tragedy of Stormheart Crescent.
Dragons that bear the Stormheart name, and attributes.
Gehennan, or mixed.

It has been decades, and the storm dragons of the world have gained wind of the former grand matriarch’s passing.

Will they seek out their new leader?
Will they try to steal her throne?
