The Montclaires bear a tradition created through poverty in which the extraneous sons and daughters are given to The Faith or The Order as per demand. These lesser courtiers under House Grimmore manage to stay afloat through the respect earned through such a gesture and that cultivated by the scholars and soldiers the practice has fielded.
Valero lei Montclaire was born the second son of Elyse and Balthier. As his mother began to swell with him the promises were given that would bind his future and see him tithed to The Faith upon his fifth birthday. His education among the cloister was rigorous in their expectations yet in time the wizened priests and kindly knights supplanted the family he had lost.
Although Valero was not dull-witted the life of scholarly pursuits gradually began to wear him down. At first the prospects had excited with a vibrant sheen that allowed him to distract himself and adapt to the changes. Now it seemed to blind him as he fell out of his depth and into the despair of mediocrity.
Previously the alternative of life in the The Order had frightened Valero for fears of inadequacy, mortality, and the further change it would impose upon the stability he had come to know. Facing his unsuitability for the life of a priest motivated his request to instead seek induction into The Order.
Nervous anticipation turned to joyous exultation as he fell in naturally with the more physical aspects of life. He resonated with the stones of the cathedrals and the scriptures of the priests, but it could not replace the sacred nature of breaking a sweat under the open sky.
Despite the diligence and aptitude with which he approaches his new lifestyle it still took longer than average for a patron Knight to take him on as a squire. The gruff Sir Aston was by not a prestigious pick, but beyond his grizzled exterior he was a kind and efficient mentor.
Sir Astor fostered Valero's attunement to the Earth throughout their travels beyond the city extending the young squire's understanding from the soil and stone beneath him to the greater network surrounding all things.
