it isn't worth the time and effort and prolonged absence of your character from the pool-of-interactable-people

100% this. I think the unique grind set needs to shift away from "okay I want to become as OP as possible" and move into "I want to make this to further the story I tell."

Admittedly, I've got a pretty strong weapon on a character but that wasn't me wanting to be strong, it was trying to tell a story of personal metamorphosis through the weapon. I got some damn good personal dev scenes making the weapon and having the conversations regarding the intention of it's creation and it's story. 

Not to mention making a weapon that tells a story is a lot more enjoyable than just making a weapon trying to do x, y, z combination to get the best stat.
