He put pressure on her.
But she was always magnificent."

Science.

What are the effects on a growing mind that is withheld from basic human interaction? Theories have come and gone throughout years of history, leaving little left unexplored - through many instances of experimentation. Yet still, many of these ‘experiments’ have not proven consistent results….and thusly, their experiments have also not been released to the public. So what happens when things don’t go as planned? When something as small as one single Ookami Pup, kept hidden within cage bars throughout the first eleven years of her existence, gains their first taste of freedom?
Of life?
XX
You’re left with Aelin.
A feral wolf pup, with little communication skill.
An impressionable mind.
-and an unexplainable thirst for chaos and thrills.

Chapter One

He made her weep.
But she made him see.
Quote:
I think I used to matter to someone.  But those days have long since gone. There are no days before these metal bars that confine me so. A cage holding me as if I am some kind of danger, but I am so small - how could I ever hurt anyone?  My skin has long since been scarred from the cold sheet of metal beneath me. Sometimes when I wake I find that my skin has managed to stick to its surface, as if it were some unbreakable adhesive. The pain of ripping myself from the metal stopped hurting long ago - but the damage it has done is irreversible.
XX
My mind has grown numb to the pain.
I’m used to being alone.

He kept her locked away.
But she survived.

Quote:XX
The Crow comes when the lights grow dim. I’ve eaten my last meal of the day, and I know The Crow will be on his way soon.  My heart beats fast and it feels like it might explode, because I don’t know if he will be in a good mood or a bad one.  Sometimes he pokes me with sharp things, and I get sick. Other times he makes me eat new foods that taste good, he calls them ‘treats’ - they aren’t so bad, unless they make me sick too. The Crow gets angry when I get sick, and no matter how much I try to apologize and keep myself from being sick, he hits me. It hurts.
XX
Sometimes he throws me into my cage and calls me useless. Other times he will pat my head and make me feel happy. I like making The Crow happy. He doesn’t hurt me when he’s happy. Life is easier when The Crow is kept happy.

He tried to quiet her.
But she sang, she danced.
Quote:
The endless monotony of being inside of this cage has little space for learning. Yet as the days go by, I have become accustomed to what some of the words The Crow and his henchmen say and what they probably mean. For instance, when they say the word ‘shot’, I know that in the near future I will be poked and prodded with The Crows' sharp tools.  Or when they say ‘Wolf’, I know they’re talking to me and want me to pay attention. I think Wolf might be my name, I like to think that it is. The word is beautiful and if it is the only part of my miserable life I get to choose, then I choose it to be Wolf. There are words I still don’t understand, like ‘Experiment Failed’, ‘Death’, and ‘Feral Beast Trash’.
XX
I have a bad feeling in my tummy when they say these words, though.
Why am I here?
What is the meaning of my existence?
It’s all I think about.
XX
He hid her away,
-and she became feral and beautiful.

The world of wolves,

A fascinated world,
A controversial world,-

Quote:This is the first day of the eleventh year I have existed, and I still don’t know why. I remember this day with stark clarity, because it is one of the most important days of my life. I woke up to the humidity and heat of the transition into Summer. It's during this time of year I don’t mind the coolness of the metal my prison provides, and often I find myself moving from one side of space to the other, to feel the renewed coolness beneath me. There was no birthday cake, or gifts. My birthday wasn’t a celebration. In fact - I was oblivious at the time that celebrating birthdays was particularly normal. But I don’t know if it were my senses or something deeper, because I felt like something was going to happen. That today was going to be different, somehow.
XX
I was right.
XX
The alarms go off, and the loudness of them startle me.  I cover my ears. The blinking red light reflecting off of the white walls that surrounded my prison,  to my surprise, excited me more than it scared me. What was happening? This is different. I like different things. Moving to the metal bars before me, I press my face into them. My nose is going crazy as I attempt to depict what’s happening through scent alone. I think I smell blood, but this is the first time I have smelled blood that I knew for certain wasn’t my own.

Quote:The first time I heard the howl of my people was amongst the chaos of a prison break.  Idair, a wolf kin known as Hati within her pack - my first introduction to her was no real introduction at all. One of The Crow’s henchmen clad in white dyed red with his own blood comes crashing into the surrounding white room, breaking through the metal door with what seemed little to no effort from the one who’d done it. Idair, Hati - my savior. She walks toward my prison, and I am frozen where I sit. I realize there are similarities between us, perhaps more than I quite understand just yet. When she hunches down and stares at me, I don’t know what to do. So I don’t do anything aside from whimper about my confusion.
XX
“Come, little wolf. You are free now. This is not proper for a child of Asena nor Saekanis.”
XX
Her words confuse me. I don’t understand what she’s saying. But I know she isn’t going to hurt me. Somehow I know this with everything inside of me. It’s as if there’s a voice inside of me telling me we were meant to meet, and that this is what I have been waiting for. To leave my prison. To leave the crow. This must be what she means.
XX
My fearlessness drives me forward toward her, and she scoops me up into her arms with little effort. The contact, the closeness - it’s what startles me. I’m not used to being touched, or cared for. This is nice. I’m beginning to understand. I cling to her and she begins to run. These moments of closeness are the ones I most remember. The smell of her hair, the warmth of her skin. An expression of both concern for me and smile for whatever she saw inside of me.
XX
As if she knew that I would become.
What I was.
