"Sapphire seas twinkle playfully under a cerulean sky, lapping waves settling upon pale white sand."
Port Fortune was founded by the Southern Seas Company in the year of 2001, there was little fanfare to mark the occasion, aside from the cascading rapturous revelries of those who had come to call the place home. Despite being nothing aside from campfires and little more than a tent-city, there was cause to celebrate, as despite a marked number of misfortunes along the way, they had prevailed. They had a place to call their own, a place to call home.
Seas so southerly oft host a tropical clime, sporting something of an eternal summer. Though the years long winters do have some effect, one will not find the bitter biting of winter's teeth though more than a thin cloak. Whilst the cacophonous calls of conflict befell the mainland, those of Port Fortune worked diligently to improve their conditions, one stone, brick, log, plank, and nail at a time.
Situated within the north-eastern quadrant of Reasano Sea, prior to the continental shelf that marks more rapturous waters, Port Fortune sits atop an atoll. Eight-hundred nautical miles off of the coast of Meranthe, a round trip may be expected to take no less than sixteen days with favorable winds. The voyage might be described by avid sailors as 'pleasant', and by less sea-inclined folks as 'tolerable'.
The primary landmark is that of a large hulk beached steadily on a crystalline reef upon within the atoll itself. A corroded plaque can reveal the ships's name to be 'Bonny the Diamond.' Though her sailing days are long behind her, she formed an invaluable place of shelter for those residents who came in the early days of Port Fortunes founding.
Currently, it's a simple place of simple tastes. A small tavern sits nested upon the atoll, a comfortable little diddy to get a meal when the day's work is done, and to perhaps rest in expectation of the days ahead. Currently, no more than 550 people call the settlement home, a reasonable smattering of magi upon them.
Being such a small settlement, so far away, does have some perks, however, the primary driving conflicts of the mainland so rarely find their way this far out to sea. The small village, resultantly is little more than a curiosity for trade and arbitrage amongst the major powers of Meranthe. Of which the inhabitants typically greet with open arms, it's hard keeping supplied so far away, but perhaps the idyllic peace the island represents speaks more than regularly having a place to sleep, or a meal to eat. Everyone has a story, and for some, this story is tied to Port Fortune.
Amongst the local population, the crew of the Southern Seas Company does their best to maintain peace, though occasionally quarrels happen, and are resolved. Some even exiled from the island in due course, though such a thing isn't common. The crew and islanders alike have taken to calling this form of policing the 'Tenuous Peace.' Under the belief that barring formal military and law enforcement, a degree of light vigilantism is warranted.
Yet, men and women cannot be everywhere at once, and the sea outside of the island can be dangerous, though not infested with pirates, such a thing should be planned and prepared for, just in case. The sea is large, and a ship is small. It's not uncommon for a vessel once underway to never make port again.
Formal Codified Laws
Port Fortune is as of the time of writing, too small to justify having a formally
codified set of laws, and broadly speaking, the same general laws that apply
throughout the land apply to Port Fortune, thus the tenuous peace reigns.
Tenuous Peace
