'Lo, the gnarling whispers
Fetid wood entwining lost paths
In memoria the elu'elane
A flame defying erasure.
My swordhand is singing
Mine eyes caught in glamour
My shield is truth
Mine armour, the love of all mankind
In memoria
That beast of tails nine and three
A dream impervious
Brought low by the song
of Caewynn
- History -
House Caewynn rose to prominence centuries ago in lieu of actions of great heroism against an unknown foe. As with most Fae houses its influence has waxed and waned depending on the circumstances of the era. Caewynn has been chosen as the house to draw a monarch from once in the past. The house possesses no narrow 'purpose' but is instead as one might expect, an amalgamation of the virtues and dreams of Delphina and the Faeborne that founded it so long ago. Caewynn draws from all corners to fill its ranks. In the recent decades it has been one of the most prominent of houses, at the forefront of the clearing of the Tower of Aietus, providing the majority of funding and many powerful warriors to fill the kings retinue, including the previous head of house, Marusil Caewynn.
When 124 struck, House Caewynn was one of the hardest hit. Losing its house head, an enormous amount of investment and capable soldiers, the house was left in the hands of panicking seneschals as the next in line was far too young to take the reigns. The years since then have been working to stabilize the household, to begin to recover and recuperate, and finally to start the search for new blood to fill in the shoes that the giants of old left in their wake.
The current head of house is Lady Elanil Caewynn, adopting the title at 16 years old in an attempt to restore authority to the home, learning the ways of nobility. It may be dire straits, but it isn't the first time that House Caewynn- who has always given every drop of blood it possesses for the good of Delphina- has bounced back from the edge.
- Purpose -
House Caewynn is, above all, a house of pragmatism. Though they hold traditional songs, titles and values close at heart, the members of Caewynn understand that Delphina is a city that evolves with the lands around it- and that this recent century is testament to that fact. Caewynn is prepared to adapt itself to the current climate. That is not to say it devalues tradition; Delphina and its monarchy stand above all. Everything else must grow to support those two.
No Faeborne could walk the streets of beloved Delphina without having heard the name and deeds of Caewynn. Always are they at the forefront of Delphina's greatest challenges, whether it be battle against enemies or navigating diplomatic and social ties. This is as much their greatest strength as their weakness, for the legendary warriors, scholars and artists they produce are oft spent in service to the crown.
Nothing is more important than supporting the monarchy of Delphina and co-operating to ensure a brighter future for the citizens of the city.
With these traits in mind, while Caewynn does not brand itself as such, the house is known mostly for diplomacy and trailblazing expeditions into the dark places of the world. When the monarch of Delphina wishes a relatable diplomat sent to the upstart Aphros, or a hardened crew prepared to search the hidden pyramids of the Expanse, their eyes look first to House Caewynn. The House also works tirelessly to sponsor new enterprises or make connections with old ones. Rumor has it they may even engage in spycraft. Anything for the good of the realm.
In the current day, Caewynn is looking to rebuild- providing a great opportunity for new blood and ambitious traders to work with a legendary lineage.
- Traditions -
As a Faeborne led household, the family members typically practise the faith and many traditions are steeped in Nemea's lore.
The Phoenix
The symbol of house Caewynn, a phoenix in a ring of flame. In modern times it is thought to represent the resilience with which Caewynn recovers and continues to serve the crown. There is evidence to suggest that the phoenix itself may be involved in the lost legend of Caewynn, either as an ally to the Faeborne or as the great enemy itself.
The Silent Vigil
Every year for a day, the house of Caewynn keeps their lips shut in silent contemplation for those that came before. This is accompanied by rituals to Nemea, and acknowledgment of the other gods.
The Ring of Caewynn
The ring of Caewynn is entwined with the ring of flames in their house sigil, though it is unsure what came first. A conduit of great power and authority that boasts offensive magic and most notably protects the wielder from 'glamour' (illusion). It is currently lost in the tower of Aetius.
- House Roles -
The roles in House Caewynn are kept simple. Ranks are only distinguished if there is a purpose to it, supporting the pragmatic ideals of Caewynn. However, the roles do often change depending on the head of house at the time.
Family
House Caewynn is led by the Faeborne born into the family, tracing their lineage directly to the first, unknown Caewynn, though the main branch has surely changed time and again due to the tendency of the leaders to put themselves into favour. Only the patriarch/matriarch has authority to make decisions on behalf of the family.
Seneschal
An administrative role, oft associated with accounting or scholarly pursuits. The Seneschal is responsible for maintaining the physical house, financial records as well as conferring with the house leader on important decisions. They can independently search for new locations to investigate or trading opportunities to consider. A seneschal in House Caewynn is most akin to an advisor and manager.
Champion
Every so often House Caewynn will host a tournament, the 'Ballad of Blades', an internal affair where a champion can be crowned. They are recognized as a symbol of the houses strength and oft charged with leading the most dangerous missions.
Head of Project
Rather than appointing a permanent head of alchemy or crafting, the role 'head of project' is given when a particularly ambitious undertaking is approved from one of the craftsmen, artists or scholars. This could be potions, weapons, a great work of art, a diplomatic undertaking, or a pursuit of research.
