Fitz, raise your plectrum and play your old lute hard,
'Cause Hel's broke loose in Esshar, and a demon deals the cards!
And if you win, you get the singing demon's voice of old,
But if you lose, the Marquis gets your soul!
Fitz the Bard was no fool. He knew very well the danger of gambling with demons. To say that it's risky is an understatement; it's foolhardy at best, and damning at its worst. The Bard considered himself an a chronicler and not an actor in the grand scheme of things, one who recorded the deeds of others, rather than performing great deeds himself. After all, there were plenty of stories to be told already.
But every now and then, Fitz decided to give the wheels of fate a little nudge, just to get a new story spun a little sooner. So when Fitz stumbled upon a music-playing demon at a crossroads, he decided to challenge it to a contest of song. He was, in fact, able to beat the demon. But then the demon said a few words that truly piqued Fitz' interest...
"Clearly, bard, you need a greater challenge than me! How would you like to pit your songs against those of a Marquis?"
It was a terribly dangerous offer. There were only five Marquises in all of Hel, and while Fitz wasn't being challenged to a battle, he was being asked to have a duel of song. A wise man would know better than to accept such an offer... And Fitz WAS a wise man. He DID know better. But it was an opportunity to tell a story like no other, and his very skill as a musician was being challenged. What could he do BUT accept?
But Fitz had no intention of facing a Marquis alone. He would gather a band of musicians like the world had never seen. They would perform before one of the dreaded Marquises of Hel. If they won, then Fitz would win the very singing voice of the Marquis, as was the bet. But if they lost...
Well, if the band lost, Fitz wouldn't be Fitz anymore. But that risk made the contest of song all the more thrilling!
