Dissertation of Quantitative Magical Identity

As our experience grows through learning, battle, and circumstance our identity forms in combination with the societal tenants that we choose...or are indoctrinated to believe. Certain "virtues" are accentuated and propagated through positive reinforcement such as praise, physical rewards, love, rank. Other, more prohibited *sins* are met with negative reinforcement such as isolation, imprisonment, and execution.
There has been an eternal debate between nature vs nurture, a magi having affinity towards certain magics or behaviors due to circumstance, or bloodline. There is undeniable evidence that nature plays a very large role in shaping identity. That being said, there is little evidence to suggest that the "nurture" aspect can play a role in shaping identity as well. The disposition of a person once fully developed, can it change? Will an occultist that has been "cleansed" suddenly change their views on the world? Would a holy magic that is "corrupted" suddenly commit to violence or other aberrations that their society deem inappropriate?
How does one begin to quantify identity? Through traits? Through magical signatures? How can one quantify Evil, Good, neutrality? These are questions that have been asked and tested throughout many years. Barsburg, through their technology have created synthetic life through trial and error? But can it be true synthetic life if a soul inhabits a shell? How does one create "Life" without a "soul"? The nature of the soul isn't as enigmatic as it once was in the past, but can consciousness and the soul be linked? Just how far can consciousness be build and nurtured to the point of sentience? What does it mean to truly be alive?
