Retainers get bugged trying pet cows.

I believe they attempt do that and cant due the cow having a solid sprite, and they need enter inside that tile for pet.

i would suggest turn off the pet fuction from retainers and let them just water crops as other bug seems be about them petting the animals constantly farming their happyness to max with few hours instead of days that is the normal.
